| Environmental Education Program in the Dahab area (DAHABEDU) | |||
Preliminary investigations During the preliminary investigations the primary schools were identified as the main target group of the sub-project "Environmental education and awareness in schools". Three primary schools in Dahab were chosen to participate in the DAHABEDU program and first contacts were established. A high motivation of the schools´ management and staff was noted with respect to supplementary environmental education in schools. A concept was developed to initiate voluntary environmental school groups. Contacts were established with the NGOs Hemaya and Wadi Environmental Science Center (WESC). Both NGOs provide experience, knowledge and support to initiate a supplementary environmental education and awareness program in schools and to develop its framework. To evaluate the participation of the tourism industry's stakeholders in the DAHABEDU program, a questionnaire was distributed to the majority of the dive centres. The questionnaire highlightened different environmental concerns and problems of the region. 63 %(*) of the dive centres which were contacted answered the questionnaires. The results reveal that the majority of dive centres appreciate environmental awareness and education campaigns in favour of a better environment and nature protection. Up to 100% of the dive centers can imagine to support environmental awareness and education initiatives. Environmental activities in the Dahab area were recognized by 87%* of the dive centres, however, more than half (63%) of these recognized environmental activities were represented by beach cleanups only. In contrast, 87%* of the dive centres observed (or regularly do observe) environmental violations that take place in Dahab and its surroundings. Possibilities were explored to initiate a regular pamphlet in regard of environmental education and conservation projects in the Dahab area serving as a forum for public and private contributing institutions. Local environmental organisations and institutions were contacted, and all expressed support regarding the publication of an environmental education and conservation pamphlet (also newsletter) as a necessary tool. Additionally, contact was established with the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA). This contact will possibly provide further support with respect to the applied conservation activities that are part of the "Public awareness campaigns" sub-project. The goals of the "Public awareness campaigns" were substantiated and the different possibilities analysed to enhance public awareness. This was done especially in regard of the coral reefs' and adjacent habitats´ degradation, the problem of destructive fisheries practices, the vast solid waste management problem as well as further environmental concerns being of local and national interest. RSEC is looking for sponsors to be able to continue this project. |
