General information about our Field Station El Quseir:

The Red Sea Environmental Centre (RSEC) field station in El Quseir was launched in early 2008 by marine biologists Robert Hofrichter and Christian Alter, latter has been representing the RSEC in El Quseir since 2005, collaborating closely with SUBEX, HEPCA and Reef Check to work on extensive reef protection projects and the elaboration and proclamation of the El Quseir-Charta on reef protection.

Just like the field station in Dahab, the RSEC field station in El Quseir focusses mainly on environmental and biological entertainment and schooling, research, formation, nature conservation and education. Nature lovers will find us at the El Quadim bay 5 kilometres north of El Quseir, also known as the “eco bay” of SUBEX   and Moevenpick, which are, along with the important Egyptian environmental NGO HEPCA , the most influential partners of  the RSEC in El Quseir.

There is a simple answer to why we chose the eco bay to be the second site for the RSEC at the Red Sea: here, we found partners who care for marine protection, who put quality before quantity, and who support us in promoting and achieving responsible diving, sustainable tourism at the Red Sea and solid education of guests as well as the protection of natural resources. We don’t want more and more destructive all-inclusive tourism- we rather build on quality and well-prepared tourists who show understanding and appreciation for the uniqueness and beauty of the coral reefs.

The RSEC field stations in Dahab and El Quseir offer biological entertainment on all levels, ranging from children and families to post-graduate, including reef biological courses, seminars and the possibility for students to carry out their thesis, dissertation and other academic papers with the help and support of RSEC experts. Junior and senior researchers get the chance to work on personal projects with logistic support of our biologists on-site. Also, we support universities in carrying out bio- and geoscientific excursions.

Anyone interested in nature is welcome to participate in our reef-biological courses and seminars, lasting from 1 hour to 2 weeks, and combine them freely with snorkelling and diving. An extensive desert program is also on offer. Furthermore, beginners and advanced learners may improve their skills at the dive centre of our partner SUBEX.

Besides all that, the RSEC plans and carries out environmental and scientific projects, focussing mainly on reef checks, but also covers terrestrial topics such as ecology, botany, herpetology and ornithology. You can apply at the RSEC for voluntary services and internships; join environmental projects, thus contributing to the protection of the coral reefs whilst learning about reef biology and gaining precious experience for your future career.

If you are planning to visit us, please book a flight to Hurghada or Marsa Alam where you will be picked up by the RSEC staff. (Transfer times: Hurghada 1.5 hours, Marsa Alam 45 minutes)
