Dr. Annika Guse has studied Biology at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany and continued her education by doing her PhD at the IMP in Vienna, Austria in the field of cell biology and biochemistry. Her main biological interest is cell division, which she studied during her PhD in mammalian cells and the nematode C. elegans. After her PhD and having dived for many years she decided to work on a Reef Monitoring project and to do conservation work at the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in Mahahual, Mexico for 3 month. For her future she likes to continue doing research in the field of cell division and would like to do use marine organisms as model systems. At the RSEC she tries to get some more in depth knowledge about marine research and helps with the translation of the RSEC webpage.

Julia Schnetzer stayed as a volunteer at the RSEC from the beginning of August to the end of September. She has been studying biology at the University of Cologne, Germany since September 2005. During her stay she helped in literature research, maintenance of the zoological collection of the RSEC, but mainly she worked in the Reef Monitoring project.

Karsten Block volunteered from August to September 2007 at the RSEC in Dahab. He has been studying geography with an emphasis on human geography at the University of Berlin, Germany. At the RSEC he worked on the scientific collection of the institute, as well as he worked on the acquisition of a cartographic archive for the RSEC. Furthermore he participated in the complete Dahab Reef Monitoring Project 2007 in order to learn more about practical fieldwork techniques.

Claudia Pogoreutz has been studying zoology at the Vienna University since 2004 with an emphasis on marine fauna. Her interests are tropical and Mediterranean marine invertebrates and fish, as well as meio- and deep sea fauna. At the RSEC she worked on the literature data base, the digital scientific image collection, extension of the scientific collection and the creation of permanent microscopic samples. Furthermore she writes reports for the FNZ-forum and helped with the translation of the webpage. In addition to that she participated in a basic research study and documentation about the situation of the local fisheries and in the Dahab Reef Monitoring 2007 for 2 weeks.

Nina Milton is a volunteer for RSEC in Dahab since July 2007. She is working with different tasks related to the Coral Reef Sustainability Programme and the Dahab Reef Monitoring Programme, especially improvement of the coral damage survey.
She has a MSc degree in marine biology from the University of Oslo (Norway). In 2005 she carried out fieldwork for her Master thesis on coral reefs outside Hurghada city coast where she looked at damage to hard corals by snorkelers.

Ines Heinrichs a volunteer at RSEC since July 2007. She studied geography and ethnology at Free University in Berlin/Germany and completed her degrees in 2004 with Magister Artium. She currently prepares her PhD in geography concerning the impairment of the nature and the ecosystem capacity of the region South Sinai in relation to the raising tourist numbers at the Gulf of Aqaba. Until the end of September 2007 Ines performs a research into the waste management of Dahab and Nuweiba and study - through interviews with different stakeholders - the history of Dahab as a tourist destination.

Martin-Lukas Dehl finished school at the free Waldorf School in Berlin and was interested in practical experience in the filed of marine biology, because he would like to study it afterwards. During his 2 month volunteering at the RSEC he works on several subjects like the zoological collection and office work as well as with outdoor activities as for example conservation relevant documentations to protect coral reefs, census of divers/snorklers at dive sites or hydrographical series of measurements.

Igor Ruza finished his studies of biology in June 2005 at the university of Basel with the focus on marine zoology and ecology. He worked from the beginning of August until the end of October as a volunteer at the RSEC in Dahab to gather practical experiences. Among other things he participated in the Coral Reef Sustainability Program at the RSEC (extended Reef Check, Dahab Reef Monitoring) as well as in projects to protect the coral reefs.

Kathrin has been studying biology and environmental science since 2003 at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Stefanie has been studying biology at the Leopold-Franzens-University in Innsbruck, Austria. In addition she is an experienced diver and dive instructor (OWSI). Stefanie finished her studies of biology in June 2004 at the University of Regensburg. She worked from the end of June until the beginning of August at the RSEC to gather some practical experiences as a volunteer with respect to marine ecological topics and reef protection initiatives. She participated in the official Summer Reef Check 2006 in Dahab and accomplished observation and documentation for the Coral Reef Sustainability Program of the RSEC. In addition she helped with the preparations for the Dahab Reef Monitoring (extended Reef Check protocol in cooperation with Reef Check Europe and Egypt).

Jörn studied biology at the University of Bremen, Germany with a focus on marine biology. He spent half a year in south and northeast Brazil for his diploma thesis supervised from the Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) in Bremen in order to specialize in fishery science and ecology of tidal habitats. He worked in Dahab from the end of July until the mid of October 2005 to establish an environmental education program for the region south Sinai. The project will be financed by a grant from the Nature Conservation Sector of the Egyptian Nature Conservation Office EEAA.

Environmental Education Program for Dahab – preliminary investigations

An environmental education program shall be initiated for Dahab and its neighborhoods. This program should create awareness towards environmental problems. The local inhabitants, Beduins and Egyptians, as well as service providers of dive tourism and stakeholders of general companies of the tourism shall be taken in account. The planned nature conservation activities shall cover a broad spectrum and among other things develop nature conservation training and education or other activities for nature conservation. The collection of information at local and regional level, networking and first coordination to develop the program, are in focus of the preliminary investigations. This project got financial support  from the Nature Conservation Sector of the Egyptian nature conservation office called Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (NCS/EEAA).

Alex studies ecology at the University od Salzburg and works for one month at the RSEC. He participated in the Coral Reef Sustainability Program by doing statistics of the number of divers and snorklers at highly frequented dive sites in order to estimate the actual threat of the fringing reefs. Furthermore he helped to plan the creation of so called “confined areas“ to protect the divers and snorklers at these dive sites (Dahab Lagoon) and worked on the planning and equipment of the inventory for the new institute building.

Vicky studies biology at the University of Hamburg, Germany with the focus ob zoology and hydrobiology. She worked for 6 weeks at the RSEC in Dahab. The main body of her work she took part in the Coral Reef Sustainability Program“, for which she did statistics of the number of divers and snorklers at highly frequented dive sites in order to estimate the actual threat of the reefs (“Census survey of divers/snorkelers at highly frequented dive sites“). In addition the observed and registered violations of regulations of protected confined reef areas and helped with the planning and equipment of the new institute building.

Niko studies biology and ecology at the University of Vienna, Austria and would like to specialize on marine biology. His major interest lays in the work of national parks (especially in the field of marine biology and in the management and administration of natural resources) and in the ecology of coral reefs. During his stay at the RSEC he accompanied the diploma student Miriam Reininger during her dives and worked on the Census Survey initiated by Babara Seeger Ibrahim about the statistical analysis of the number of divers and snorklers at highly frequented dive sites in order to estimate the actual threat of the reefs. He furthermore assisted with the accomplishment of a biological course and helped with literature search in the internet.

Barbara studies sport science at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland and worked during her stay for three month for the RSEC. Under supervision of Dr. Alexander Keck she helped with the development of the institute. She did administration and accomplished a nature conservation project independently (Census of divers/snorklers at highly frequented dive sites in Dahab), which is the important basis for the planned nature conservation project of Dipl.Biol. Christian Alter (Environmental Impact Study: Monitoring and documentation of coral damage at selected dive sites in Dahab).
